Eirik Hegdal’s genre play with “turnchest” is formidable and brimming with surplus energy. The music has roots in modern jazz, but “turnchest” is a life-affirming fireworks display of diverse elements. As a recording, the music is exceptionally well produced, and we must highlight the musicians’ own unique contributions to the work. “turnchest” knocks you flat, yet as a listener you are left feeling nothing but joy. It is rare to encounter pluralism that works this well—it is both playful, moving, and original. The work radiates a striking uncompromising quality without being either trashy or overly refined. The piece is dense with elements, yet everything seems to carry great value, and the parts are assembled into a coherent and functioning whole.
